The US Monastir from Tunisia won the Basketball Africa League (BAL 2022) with a 73-72 victory over Angola’s Petro de Luanda.
The match took place at BK Arena on Saturday evening, May 28, 2022. It was attended by various dignitaries including Mrs. Jeannette Kagame, who expressed her appreciation for the good performance of both teams.
Even before the start of the game, the US Monastir was the one to be given the chance to win but was severely beaten by Petro de Luanda who led it for a long time.
The first half of the match ended with the US Monastir leading by 18 points to 17 by Petro de Luanda but in the second, the Angolan team, with the help of Gerson Goncalves and Carlos Morais, dominated the final in Tunisia by 40-33 points.
In contrast, the US Monastir came out on top in the third quarter, scoring two points; it ended 59-57, giving it confidence that it could behave well.
The 31-year-old has also scored six goals, helping his side win their first Africa Cup of Nations title in history.
The best place he ever won was the third, in the 2017 FIBA Africa Champions Cup.
Dixon was named the 2022 BAL Most Valuable Player.
Other players supporting the Tunisian team include Ater Majok, Slimane Radhouane, former Captain of the US Monastery, Firas Lahyani and Souleyman Diabate.
US Monastir coached by Modrag Perisic reached the final against Zamalek in the semi-finals while coach Peter de Luanda of Jose Neto fired FAP from Cameroon.
Zamalek won the third place match on Friday, May 27, 2022, winning by a score of 97-74.
This is not the first time that US Monastir has played in the final because when the tournament started last year, the team lost in the final to Egypt’s Zamalek SC 76-63.
BK Arena has hosted the BAL 2022 tournament from ¼ played on May 21-28, 2022. The US Monastir won the trophy through a local Sahara Conference regional qualifier played in March 2022, held at Dakar Arena in Senegal. .
Petro de Luanda, on the other hand, went through the Nile Conference, a team that played in Cairo, Egypt in April 2022.
